MSP celebrates National Volunteer Week

Minneapolis—St. Paul International Airport (MSP) will celebrate National Volunteer Week 2013 from April 21-27, to recognize the efforts of Travelers Assistance and Armed Forces Service Center volunteers.

2012 VOLUNTEER FACTS:

  • 78,122: # of hours given by volunteers 
  • 1,208,310: # of people Travelers Assistance served 
  • 185: # of Armed Forces Service Center volunteers who serve around the clock

VOLUNTEER PROFILES

Judy

Bloomington native, Judy, has served as a Travelers Assistance volunteer for five years. Judy sometimes serves as a Go Guide, which means she roams the terminal looking for people in need. “I love it, it’s just the best thing. I get to meet so many good people,” said Judy of her volunteer experience. 

 

 

 

 

 

Alan

Alan is a professor at St. Kate’s University in Minneapolis and still finds time to volunteer at least once a week! He’s served as a Travelers Assistance volunteer with the Airport Foundation MSP for more than six years. When asked why he volunteers at MSP he replied, “I love the airport environment. I find it energizing.”

 

 

 

 

 

Karen

After 45 years working in the airline industry, Karen wasn’t ready to give it up. She decided the perfect way to stay connected to aviation was to serve as a Travelers Assistance volunteer. For nearly two years she’s been helping travelers on their way by working Information Booths throughout Terminal 1-Lindbergh. “I love to meet people from around the world and help make their travel experience a pleasurable one,” she said.

 

 

 

 

 

Ken

Ken has been an Airport Foundation MSP, Travelers Assistance volunteer since 2010. He worked for several years as a corporate travel coordinator and has always had an interest in traveling; which made volunteering for the Airport Foundation MSP the perfect fit! Ken said the people he meets and the variety of tasks he is assigned are his favorite parts about volunteering at MSP. “It’s nice to have variety and not do the same thing every volunteer shift,” said Ken.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sandy

Sandy has lived near the airport her whole life and when a friend asked her about volunteering at MSP she thought it would be a great fit. She greatly enjoys volunteering at Terminal 2-Humphrey and says the terminal has a community feeling to it - everyone knows everyone else. She also enjoys volunteering at MSP because she has become an unofficial Minnesota Ambassador. Sandy enjoys giving suggestions of fun things to do in Minnesota to people who new to the area.

 

 

 

 

 

Steve

Seven years ago, Steve read a newspaper article titled “Angels in the Airport” that profiled MSP Airport volunteers. The article inspired him to become a Travelers Assistance volunteer with the Airport Foundation MSP. He greatly enjoys the diversity this volunteer position entails, “It’s never the same volunteer shift,” he said. He enjoys being asked every imaginable question of people from all around the world.
