Tornado drills to be held at MSP today

Amid the ice and thunder snow, it’s hard to imagine that summer is right around the corner. This week, April 15-19, marks Severe Weather Awareness Week. According to the National Weather Service, Minnesota experiences an average of 40 tornadoes per year. In 2012, 37 twisters touched down.

Understanding this threat and knowing what to do when a tornado is approaching can save lives. Today, Thursday, April 18, MSP will join the rest of Minnesota in annual state-wide tornado drills at 1:45 and 6:55 p.m.

The MAC will hold drills at Terminal 1-Lindbergh at 1:45 p.m near Gates E7-9 and at Terminal 2-Humphrey at 6:55 p.m. near Gates H7-8. ALL MSP AIRPORT EMPLOYEES ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE.

At Terminal 1, United Airlines will request its passengers in the G8 gate hold to participate in the drill. Customers who agree to participate will be rewarded with a Caribou Coffee gift card. Designated shelter areas that will be utilized during the drill at Terminal 1 are:

  • Restrooms E-2402 and E-2406 near Gate E8
  • Restrooms E-2367 and E-2363 near Gate E9
  • Stairwell E-2ST18A near Gate E8

At Terminal 2, Southwest Airlines will request its passengers in the H7 gate hold to participate in the drill. Customers who agree to participate will be rewarded with a Caribou Coffee gift card. Designated shelter areas that will be utilized during the drill at Terminal 2 are:

  • Restrooms HT-2265A and HT-2265B near Gate H6
  • Restrooms HT-2285A and HT-2285B near Gate H7
