The New Standards’ Steve Roehm to perform with his trio at MSP Airport

Avant-guard vibraphonist Steve Roehm will give passengers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) a thrill when his new group The Neighborhood Trio performs at Terminal 1-Lindbergh on August 26.

Known as a core member of the eclectic combo The New Standards, Roehm’s trio is a hybrid of sounds that result in an upbeat blend of jazz, country and Motown instrumentals. He’s joined by Dan Schwartz on lap steel and guitar and Josh Schwalbach on upright bass.

“The Neighborhood Trio is an outlet for me to write music and to play Dan’s music,” said Roehm. The group doesn’t carry the recognition that The New Standards has, which is kind of nice. It lets us fly under the radar and do things The New Standards might never do – like play the airport.”

“We wanted to play the airport because it sounded like a unique opportunity or exposure to new fans. And who doesn’t want to play the airport?”

Tailored around a combination of originals and cover songs the group likes, The Neighborhood Trio has a quality that makes people feel at ease and happy.

“I think it’s a perfect fit for a weary traveler,” said Roehm.

Airport Foundation MSP Arts & Culture Director Robyne Robinson is extremely pleased about The Neighborhood Trio’s upcoming performance. “Our music series has really diversified over the past two years. We’ve worked very hard to attract prime artists to our growing program; to have an artist like Steve and his trio perform with us says we are on our way to hosting star-quality artists and music events.”

The Neighborhood Trio plays 1-3 p.m. at Terminal 1-Lindbergh August 26. For more information, visit the Airport Foundation MSP's website at www.airportfoundation.org.
